This past Saturday (10/15), the Maddogs defeated the University of Buffalo 67-7 to secure their second win of the season. Led by a hat trick from French fly-half Victor Gourdon, the Maddogs led from wire-to-wire in their most complete game of the season. Also scoring tries were Alvaro Borrego (outside-center), Tom McKeon (wing), Sam Moyle (wing) and Dilyn McHugh (fullback). With the win, the team moved to 2-3 in Liberty Conference play, and finished 4th in Liberty East. Next up for the Dogs is a Bowl matchup against Fordham on 11/5 @Fairfield.
The Maddogs came out firing in a physical matchup against Harvard on the weekend of their 150th anniversary. Northeastern started the day off with two breakaway tries from Alvaro Borrego and Sam Moyle. Harvard responded quickly with two more, tying the game up at 12-12 going into the half. The second half started off with a try in the corner from Sam Moyle. Harvard responded with a converted try after a series of phases strung together. Northeastern’s forwards then led a barrage of hard lines down in Harvard’s 22 that resulted in a try from Conor Kelly under the posts. More ball security and strong play from the forwards brought in a try from captain Sam Sagherian under the posts. The Maddogs held on for another 5 minutes as the clock ran out with a final score of 31-19. Flyhalf Victor Gourdon was 0-1 from penalties and slotted 3 conversions in a loud and windy Harvard stadium.
Last Friday, we traveled out to Worcester to cap off our preseason with a friendly match vs Holy Cross, and the Crusaders came out swinging! With an accurate kicking game Holy Cross pinned the Dogs backline into a corner to take a 14 point lead after the first 20 minutes of play. It didn’t take long for the Maddog pack to reform and mount a solid counter attack. Our boys pushed in 3 converted trys of our own to take a 21-14 lead after 40. We grew that lead to 26-14 early in the 2nd half before both teams began filtering in the Bs . We want to thank Holy Cross for the competition and wish them the best for their season
“After piling up big scores in their first two games, Northeastern battled a defensively strong Fairfield team and has plenty of issues getting through for points. It was only 7-3 at halftime—Coleman Jackson scoring the lone try. In the second half Dor Perhl scored for NU but Fairfield added a penalty and then a converted try to take a 13-12 lead. Matthew Urea’s penalty kick and and Sammy Moyle’s try late in the game pulled it out for the Huskies in dramatic fashion.”
On Saturday the Maddogs took down the first opponent of the season, UMass. Northeastern took the fight to UMass early, scoring quickly end ending the first half up 35-5. The second half concluded in similar fashion with a final score of 65-5, contributed in large part by a monumental 4 tries from wing Ryan Connolly during the match. Next week, the Maddogs will travel to Rhode Island to compete against URI.
Unfortunately the fall 15s season has been cancelled due to the covid-19 restrictions. The Maddogs will be back this spring stronger than ever. Players interested in joining the club should still reach out to us on our social media to get involved in the meantime.
Sadly, the remainder of the spring 2020 season will be cancelled due to risks with COVID-19. Huge thanks to all the players who put in the hours this season and already tasted some success in the LA 7’s tournament.
Special thank you to our graduating senior leaders: Darren Chan, David de Luzuriaga, Mike Eiden, Niall Carlsen, and our President Anthony Salvatore.
Northeastern ended the season this year 9-0 taking home Liberty Conference D1A championship. Huge thanks to everyone who came out and supported the Maddogs this season. We will be back in the Spring as our Rugby 7s season picks up, along with a Rugby 15s side.
